We took our fourth Disney Cruise in December 2017, and honestly, I had still never gotten up early enough for the Castaway Cay 5K. I promised myself, and my dad, that I’d finally check it off my Disney bucket list.
The Castaway Cay 5K is a special race that isn’t officially put on by runDisney, but Disney Cruise Line hosts on their cruise port at Castaway Cay. Disney’s private island makes for a beautiful backdrop for a mid-vacation workout.
Frankly, I was way more excited to run on vacation than I thought I’d be. To register for the Castaway Cay 5K, you go down to guest services to get tickets for the people in your party. Anyone 10 and over can run. The day of Castaway Cay, you meet at a designated location. On the Disney Wonder, we met at Azure.
Once you check in, you’ll notice many cruisers will show up at the meeting location in their swimsuits and beach totes. Trust me, you’ll lose most of those people to the beach before you even reach the starting line.
As you’re escorted onto the island, before all the other cruisers, a huge chunk of the group will sneak away from the runners and grab beach chairs. Once the runners who have stuck around make it to the starting line, you store your things in the trunks and the race begins.
You begin by running towards the island’s airstrip. I talk about the history of this airstrip in my Castaway Cay blog post. It’s kinda crazy. Then the group will take a right into a super densely forested loop. Our cruise staff team joked that it was like Disney’s Jurassic Park, and they might even release raptors to chase us back to the finish line.
Once you go through the loop, you take a right, go down the airstrip, turn around and do the loop AGAIN. A LOT of people skipped this part. A ton of people skip the loop. Once you’re done with your second loop, you head back to the starting line. There is a clock, so you can see your finishing time. As you sprint through the finish, you get your medal.
It costs absolutely nothing to do the Castaway Cay 5K while you’re on your Disney Cruise, and I think it’s totally worth it to try at least once. You get to work off the shrimp, get a cool medal and early access to the island! If you want, you can walk the entire thing. It’s a very relaxed environment.
